eWEEK has an online library going back to 2000 and a lot more legacy information in our file storage going all the way back to 1983, the year we started in business as the PC Week newspaper at Ziff Davis Inc. So we’ve been collecting a LOT of company and product information for a long, long time.
At eWEEK, we do somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 20 company briefings per week, so we’re always up to date with new product and service offerings.
As we do for all of our new IT Library pages, we gather information from a range of IT industry sources for our top security products articles. Our most frequently used sources have been analyst firms Gartner and Forrester, testing company NSS Labs, and user review sites Gartner Peer Reviews, G2 Crowd and IT Central Station. We interview company officials and industry analysts and scour data sheets. We aggregate all information to best inform our content, and you, our guest.
We’ll give each company an overall eWEEK grade, based upon the totality of the information we gather. This may change as time goes on and new products come into the market.
In the security category, we analyze security and threat-blocking ability, performance, ease of implementation, ease and richness of management, technical support, and customer satisfaction, among other features. The evaluation criteria vary depending on the product area.
We usually limit the list to 10 companies. There are vendors outside the top 10 that merit consideration, of course, and we’ll sometimes include those as honorable mentions.
