On Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST/7 p.m. GMT, @eWEEKNews will host its monthly #eWEEKChat. The topic will be “Predictions, Sure Things and Wild Guesses for IT in 2020.” It will be moderated by Chris Preimesberger, eWEEK’s editor-in-chief.

      Some quick facts:

Topic: “Predictions, Sure Things and Wild Guesses for IT in 2020”

      Date/time: Dec. 11, 2019 @11a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST/7 p.m. GMT

      Hosted by: @eWEEKNews

      Moderator: Chris Preimesberger: @editingwhiz

Tweetchat handle: You can use #eWEEKChat to follow/participate via Twitter itself, but it’s easier and more efficient to use the real-time chat room link at CrowdChat. Instructions are on that page; log in at the top right, use your Twitter handle to register, and the chat begins promptly at 11am PT. The page will come alive at that time with the live discussion. You can join in or simply watch the discussion as it is created. Special thanks to John Furrier of SiliconAngle.com for developing the CrowdChat app.

Our in-chat experts: Simon Crosby, SWIM;  Ross Garrett, Cloud Elements; Praveen Seshadri, AppSheet; Sheng Liang, Rancher Labs; and Niraj Tolia, KastenHQ. Attendees can offer their own perspectives at any time.

‘Predictions, Sure Things and Wild Guesses for IT in 2020’

Everybody wants to hear about what’s likely to happen in the future—not that anybody knows exactly what’s going to take place, that is. Guesses—educated and wild alike—can spark interesting discussions. But it’s fun and entertaining to discuss the great things that are likely to happen, especially in the world of IT, where there’s never a dull news moment.

It’s also appropriate to look back and see what we accomplished in 2019 and how it may impact what we do in 2020. We may check back on some of the #eWEEKchat topics we discussed in 2019, which was another year marked by the fast ascendance of artificial intelligence everywhere, the rise of the edge computing and IoT markets, smart cars and chatbots telling us what to do through our personal devices.

5G didn’t quite get into widespread use in 2019, but it definitely looks like 2020 will be the year.

We saw the continued rise of RISC-V processing, machine learning-based apps, blockchain databases, citizen development software projects and the continued influx of inexpensive foreign-made phones from Huawei and others in the smartphone business.

We also saw the usual high number of major security breakdowns, data privacy debates, another new iPhone and the continued development of big data analytics, business intelligence, cognitive computing and robotics.

      Ending Year 7 of #eWEEKchat!

With this in mind, eWEEK is ending its seventh year of eWEEKchats (this one will be No. 81; we took the summer off this year and had a special off-the-grid #eWEEKchat or two during those years) with a look ahead to 2020 and the new and different things we may expect to encounter. We will have some special guests online with us to offer their takes on all of this.

Everybody is invited: users, non-users, analysts, vendors, other journalists, seers, non-seers—everybody.

Need some ideas? eWEEK is currently running a series of “Predictions 2020” articles. Read them over before you join our chat next Wednesday.

Here comes a prediction right now: We will pose questions such as:

      • What new devices, software and services might we expect to see in 2020?
      • Will Facebook and Google continue to make improvements in their data privacy processes in 2020?
      • Will we ever be able to get a handle on keeping data secure? Will we ever be able to completely screen out the bad human elements?
      • Can we ever have a completely secure election using IT in the United States?
      • How are stringent new EU geographic security requirements—which came into play a year and a half ago—impacting data security globally?
      • Could the fast development of cognitive computing turn into a serious problem? Elon Musk and the late Stephen Hawking are among the most prominent worriers about this.
      • Can we expect any type of improvement in online personal data privacy in 2020?

Plan to join us for what promises to be a fun and illuminating hour on Dec. 11. Get your predictions ready and lay them out for us!
